StateFlow vs LiveData

StateFlow and LiveData are both Kotlin-based tools used for reactive programming in Android development. While they share many similarities, there are also some differences between them. Here's a brief overview:

LiveData:

In summary, while LiveData is designed specifically for Android and is lifecycle-aware, StateFlow is more general-purpose and is flow-based. Q. Why we need ViewModel when we have rememberSaveable in jetpack compose ?

ViewModel is a useful tool for managing the state of multiple composable functions or fragments within a screen.

While RememberSaveable can help manage the state of a single composable function, it may not be sufficient for managing the state of an entire screen or fragment. In these cases, ViewModel is a better choice for managing the state of the entire screen or fragment.

How to hold the navController in view model in jetpack compose

It is not recommended to hold the navController instance directly in a ViewModel in Jetpack Compose. This is because the navController is tied to the lifecycle of the composable hierarchy, and not the ViewModel. Holding a reference to navController in the ViewModel could cause memory leaks or incorrect behavior.

Instead, you can use a combination of the rememberNavController() and LocalLifecycleOwner functions to obtain the navController instance in your composable functions, and pass it as a parameter to your ViewModel. Here's an example of how to do this:

Define a ViewModel that takes a NavController instance as a parameter:

In your composable function, obtain the navController instance using rememberNavController() and LocalLifecycleOwner:
