Additional information

Installed Nix a couple weeks ago. Now coming back to try out some of the first-step Nix tutorials https://nix.dev/tutorials/first-steps/
Finding out that none of the Nix-related command are working, e.g zsh: command not found: nix-shell.

Can ascertain there must be a previous installation given the installation script reported Found existing Nix volume. Having completed some basic troubleshooting following the command line outputs, e.g. ascertain that there exists /nix directory in the file system root, under which contains /store and /var as seemingly normal. Also check the synlink /Users/<my_name>/.nix-profile points to a non-existing path, which seems surprising.

Since not using Nix for any immediate project needs, would like some guidance and explanation along the troubleshooting instructions to get some understanding of the inner workings, if possible. Thanks!

Do you recall whether the commands worked after the initial install? Assuming the answer is yes:

macOS updates have had a habit of overwriting the shell hook the installer places in /etc/zshrc, so I'd guess that you've taken an update since installing Nix. For future reference, you don't have to reinstall to fix this--you can just replace it. See #3616 for more.

At this point, though, I would recommend following the uninstall instructions (https://nixos.org/manual/nix/stable/installation/uninstall.html#macos) before reinstalling it so that we're more confident about the state of your install if the commands still aren't working.
